A successful buffet depends on traffic flow. The route guests follow should make sense: put plates at the start, food in the middle, and forks and napkins at the end so no one has to search for utensils while holding a plate.

Separating hot and cold foods into different stations prevents lines from getting backed up; this small distinction makes a big difference at large gatherings. Label each dish with its name and, when needed, an allergen note—both a thoughtful and safe touch. Give each dish its own serving spoon so utensils do not move between dishes and carry allergens.

Staggering the serving dishes—placing taller ones in back and shorter ones in front—increases visibility and adds depth to the buffet.
