A formal table setting is where etiquette becomes visible. Every utensil has its place, and the logic is simple: arrange utensils in the order they will be used, from the outside in.

Forks go to the left of the plate, and knives and spoons to the right; the sharp edge of each knife always faces the plate. Water and wine glasses are arranged diagonally at the upper right of the plate, while the bread plate sits at the upper left.

Neatly folding the napkin on the plate or to the left of the forks, and placing the dessert fork horizontally above the plate, are subtle but defining details of a formal table.

Tips

Small touches that make a difference

Forks on the left, knives and spoons on the right; arrange them from the outside in.
Arrange the water and wine glasses diagonally at the upper right of the plate.
Fold the napkin neatly on the plate or to the left of the forks.
The bread plate sits at the upper left; the dessert fork lies horizontally above the plate.
Align all place settings at an equal distance from the edge of the table.
Do not put out a utensil that will not be used; every utensil should have a purpose.
