Can an Oven Be Used to Heat the Kitchen?

An oven should not be used to heat a kitchen. Gas ovens release colorless, odorless carbon monoxide during combustion; leaving the oven door open lets this gas into the room. An electric oven does not pose this risk, but an open, hot oven can cause burns or a fire, uses a lot of electricity, and puts strain on the oven’s components. Heating a room is what space heaters are for.

A gas oven produces heat by burning gas, and every combustion process produces some byproducts. These include carbon monoxide, which is colorless, odorless, and impossible to detect by sight or smell. When the oven is closed and working properly, these byproducts leave through the oven’s exhaust path. If the door is left open, they flow directly into the kitchen. In a closed kitchen with the windows shut, this buildup is dangerous and can progress without anyone noticing. Using an oven for heat is in the same category as leaving a burner on.

An electric oven does not produce this gas because there is no combustion, but other hazards remain. An open door makes the oven’s front and the inside glass of the door accessible; these surfaces can reach hundreds of °C / hundreds of °F and burn anyone who touches them instantly. An open door poses a direct risk if there are children or pets in the home. Standing on the door can break its hinge. Because an oven running with its door open cannot retain heat, its thermostat also stays on continuously.

There is also a fire risk. Flammable items in the kitchen, such as cloths, paper towels, curtains, and plastic bags, heat up in front of an open oven door. A cloth hung in front of the oven to dry or clothing placed on top of it is among the most common forms of this hazard. Do not put any item inside or on top of the oven to warm it. Running the oven empty with its door open also puts unnecessary strain on the heating element and shortens its life.

Heating needs can be met in other ways. Electric space heaters made to heat rooms are both safer and more efficient than an oven when used properly. If you are already cooking in the kitchen, heat radiating from the closed oven will warm the room somewhat; that is enough, and no extra step is needed. After cooking, you can leave the oven door ajar while the oven is off and empty so the remaining heat can spread into the room. This is safe and does not shorten the oven’s life.

A few rules always apply to gas appliances. Keeping a carbon monoxide detector in the kitchen is a simple, effective precaution for homes that use a gas range or oven. If you smell gas, do not use the appliance; close the valve and ventilate the area. Ventilate the kitchen and turn on the range hood while the range or oven is operating. Follow these rules both while cooking and when the oven door is closed. Check the detector’s battery one time per year. The same rules apply to portable gas stoves.

Karbon monoksit kısmı ciddi bir uyarı. Kışın fırını açık bırakıp mutfakta oturan komşularımız var, bunu göstereceğim.
