Teeth play an important role in chewing and breaking down food so it is ready for digestion. Diet is also said to play a major part in protecting dental health. Some foods are thought to support dental health, while others may harm teeth. Here are some foods described as beneficial to dental health.

Dairy products
The calcium and phosphate in dairy products such as milk, yogurt, and cheese are said to support teeth and gum health. Regularly eating these foods is considered one habit that may help prevent cavities. Including dairy at breakfast or as a snack is presented as general dietary advice. Cheese in particular is said to help maintain the mouth’s acid balance and thereby reduce cavity risk. Eating a slice of cheese after a meal is a traditional recommendation. Hard cheeses are thought to have a more pronounced effect than soft cheeses.

Fruits and vegetables
The minerals and vitamins in fruits and vegetables are considered important for gum health. Fruits rich in vitamin C, especially pomegranates, oranges, and mandarins, are said to support gum health. Firm fruits and vegetables that require chewing, such as apples and carrots, are also said to increase saliva production and help maintain the mouth’s acid balance. Gently rubbing a banana peel on the teeth is said to create a natural whitening effect over time; however, bananas themselves are high in sugar, so rinsing the mouth with water after eating one is recommended. These practical methods do not replace regular toothbrushing and should be considered only supportive.

Tooth-friendly drinks
Drinking water, green tea, and various herbal teas are said to support teeth and gums because of their antioxidant and antibacterial properties. Drinking these beverages without sugar is described as important for preserving their benefits. If sweetening is needed, a small amount of honey is recommended instead of sugar. Acidic drinks may damage tooth enamel, so limiting them and rinsing the mouth with water afterward is advised.

Foods to watch for
Foods high in sugar and acidic drinks are among those to watch for when considering dental and gum health. Acid formed when sugar interacts with bacteria in the mouth can contribute to cavities. Rather than eliminating these foods entirely, paying attention to oral care after consuming them is recommended. Sticky candies remain on the teeth longer and therefore require particular care.

General oral-care tips
Regular oral care is also important for protecting dental health. Brushing at least 2 times a day for 2–3 minutes is presented as a basic habit. Cleaning between your teeth once a day with floss or an interdental brush, and using mouthwash when needed, is also recommended. Regular dental checkups can help identify potential problems early.
