How Can You Tell the Coating on an Air Fryer Basket Has Worn Out?

An air fryer basket's coating has worn out when its once-smooth, matte surface starts showing scratches, bubbling or peeling; at those spots the bare metal underneath is exposed, and food no longer releases the way it used to. Why do scratches and bubbling matter? Fine scratches on non-stick coating build up over time from metal utensils, wire scrubbers or harsh brushes; at first they seem purely cosmetic, but once the coating's integrity is broken, tiny particles can flake off into food from those spots. Bubbling or blistering on the coating usually comes from excessive heat or running the basket empty for too long, and once a blister pops, bare metal is exposed directly underneath. Faded, dulled patches on the bottom or sides of the basket signal the coating has thinned; even without visible peeling yet, it's largely lost its non-stick properties, and food starts sticking and burning in those areas. Can you keep using a basket once the coating peels? Continuing to cook in a basket with visibly peeling coating isn't recommended; flaking particles can end up in food, and regular exposure adds up to an unwanted risk. A small, limited scratch doesn't necessarily mean immediate replacement, but once peeling spreads across multiple spots, the basket should be considered at the end of its life. Using silicone or wooden tools, avoiding harsh scrubbers, and not running the basket completely empty at high heat for long stretches all extend the coating's life. Washing with a soft sponge and mild soap instead of abrasive powders helps the same way. A similar kind of wear rarely appears on stainless pressure cooker interiors, but enameled pressure cookers can chip or crack in their coating too; the same logic applies there — don't cook in areas where the coating has failed, and replace the pot instead. How do heat and spare parts affect coating lifespan? A basket's coating wears out faster when exposed to excessive heat, for instance running well above the temperature range recommended in the manual; sticking to that recommended range directly affects how long the coating lasts. Some manufacturers sell replacement baskets separately; replacing just the inner basket once its coating fails, instead of the whole appliance, is both cheaper and produces less waste — this option can be checked in the appliance's manual or the manufacturer's official sales channels. If a basket has a grill insert, it behaves differently from the coated base and sides; usually only the base and walls carry the non-stick coating, while the grill wires are bare metal, and any rust or discoloration there shouldn't be confused with coating failure. A faint smell or bit of smoke during the first few uses of a new basket is normal, coming from a protective layer burning off from manufacturing; if that smell persists past the first few uses, though, it may point to a manufacturing defect in the coating. Washing and drying a new basket with warm, soapy water before its first use also removes manufacturing dust and greatly reduces this odor.
