How Do You Know a Plastic Storage Container Needs Replacing?

The clearest sign a plastic storage container needs replacing is that it keeps holding onto smells or stains even after washing; this usually means fine, invisible scratches have built up on the surface, and those scratches trap odor molecules and bacteria. A lid that no longer clicks into place properly, or a container that has warped from heat, are also signs it's time to move on. Surface and odor warning signs A container used often with tomato sauce, red pepper or turmeric will eventually pick up a yellow-orange stain; that stain isn't just cosmetic, it's a sign that micro-scratches on the surface have deepened. A smell that lingers even after a dishwasher cycle means the container can no longer be cleaned properly. If the container has lost its clarity and gone cloudy, or the surface feels rough to the touch, that texture becomes a good place for bacteria and odors to settle in. Warping and lid problems If a container warps out of shape when it holds hot food or goes in the microwave, the plastic has lost its heat resistance; the lid no longer seats properly after that, and liquid can leak out. The same leaking problem happens once the rubber seal around the lid hardens and loses its flexibility. A crack forming on the base or sides leads to both leaking and food debris getting trapped inside the crack; that kind of damage can't be cleaned away. How often should you check and replace them? Plastic containers in regular use should generally be reviewed every 1 to 2 years; ones that have gone cloudy, cracked, or keep holding onto smells shouldn't wait that long before being replaced. A container that has warped from heat should be taken out of use right away, since plastic that's changed shape can behave unpredictably when it meets heat again. Glass or stainless steel containers hold up longer against scratching and staining than plastic does, so gradually switching frequently used containers to those materials cuts down how often you need to replace them. What signs mean it's time to replace a glass container? Glass storage containers hold up far better than plastic against scratching and staining, but fine cracks from a drop often go unnoticed; holding the container up to the light and checking the edges can reveal them. A cracked glass container carries a risk of shattering under a sudden temperature change, from cold to hot, and should be retired immediately. The lids on glass containers are usually plastic or silicone; even if the glass itself is fine, the seal on the lid hardening creates the same leaking problem. In that case, replacing just the lid is a cheaper fix than throwing out the whole container. The recycling code on the container, the number inside the triangle on the base, indicates which type of plastic it's made from; some types hold up better against heat and scratching than others. Checking that code when buying containers meant for frequent use means replacing them less often down the line. It's also worth checking whether a container is labeled microwave-safe before heating it that way; one without that label can warp or soften unexpectedly in the microwave even if it seems heat-resistant. This check matters even more when buying colorful containers marketed for children's use.

Domates soslu yemekleri hep aynı kapta sakladığım için yaklaşık 1.5 yılda kap donuklaştı ve leke tutmaya başladı, yazınızdaki gibi bulaşık makinesinde bile koku gitmedi.
