How long food stored in a home freezer lasts depends on the type of food and the quality of its packaging. As a general rule, most foods can be kept safely in the freezer for months, although their quality may decline over time. How long do red meat and chicken last? Tightly wrapped cuts of red meat can be stored in the freezer for 4–12 months. Ground meat has a larger surface area, so it is recommended that you use it within 3–4 months. Chicken pieces can retain their quality in the freezer for up to 9 months. Fish loses quality faster than red meat and chicken: fatty fish can keep well in the freezer for 2–3 months, while lean fish can keep well for up to 6 months. How long do vegetables and fruits last? Vegetables that are blanched, cooled in cold water, and then frozen retain quality close to that of fresh vegetables for 8–12 months. Vegetables frozen directly without blanching may lose their texture sooner. Similarly, fruit can be frozen in a single layer after being cut into pieces so they do not stick together, and stored for 8–10 months. Leafy greens are the least suitable group for freezing. Watery leafy vegetables such as lettuce may become mushy when thawed as they lose water, so freezing them is not recommended. How long do prepared meals and soups last? Homemade soups and stews frozen in an airtight container should be used within 2–3 months; after that, their flavor and texture begin to deteriorate noticeably. Bread and baked goods can also keep well in the freezer for 2–3 months. Take care when freezing dairy products: hard cheeses can be frozen, but soft cheeses and cream may separate and lose their texture when thawed. Why does proper packaging matter? Freezer burn caused by exposure to air negatively affects a food's flavor and texture, so it is recommended to freeze foods in vacuum-sealed bags or tightly sealed containers. Removing all the air from a bag greatly reduces the risk of freezer burn. Writing the freezing date on packages makes it easier to keep track of which foods should be used and when; unlabeled packages can accumulate in a freezer until it becomes unclear how long they have been there. Freezer temperature also directly affects storage time: in a freezer kept steadily at −18°C / 0°F or below, food stays safe, and the times listed above are for best quality. Frequent temperature fluctuations, such as from opening and closing the door often, may make food quality deteriorate faster. When adding new food, placing older packages at the front and newer ones at the back is a practical way to reduce waste: the oldest package is then always in the position to be used first, preventing forgotten food from accumulating. Freezing foods in usable portions rather than large pieces also shortens thawing time and prevents more food than needed from being thawed at once. Food that has been thawed once and is not refrozen gives a better result in terms of both quality and safety; portioning food before freezing is one of the most practical freezer habits.
