A bowl (about 150 g) of cooked chickpeas contains an average of 240–250 calories. Dry chickpeas absorb water and increase to more than 2 times their weight during cooking; the calories come from the chickpeas themselves, while the cooking water only adds weight. The same amount of roasted chickpeas can easily exceed 250 calories because they lose water during roasting and are often fried with oil or salted. Preparation can therefore significantly affect the calories in chickpeas.

What is the difference between dry and cooked chickpeas?
One hundred grams of dry chickpeas contains about 364 calories, while the same chickpeas can weigh up to 2.5 times as much after boiling in water, bringing cooked chickpeas to about 164 calories per 100 g. The calories do not disappear; the same calories are spread across more weight because of the absorbed water. Do not confuse “a handful of dry chickpeas” in a recipe with “a bowl of cooked chickpeas”: they have the same calories from the original chickpeas, but very different serving volumes.

Are canned chickpeas different in calories?
When drained and rinsed, canned chickpeas have nearly the same calories as home-cooked chickpeas, about 160–170 calories per 100 g. The canning liquid usually contains salt, but its calories are negligible. Some canned chickpea products may contain small amounts of sugar or starch added during processing, adding a few calories per 100 g, though the difference is generally no more than 10 calories.

What is the nutritional value of chickpeas?
A significant share of the calories in a bowl of cooked chickpeas comes from plant protein, with the rest from carbohydrates and fiber. Their fat content is quite low, and most of that small amount is unsaturated fat. Chickpeas’ high fiber content helps explain why they are filling relative to their calories. Legumes can provide a similar feeling of fullness with fewer calories than meat or grains.

What increases calories in chickpea dishes?
The main factor that raises calories in chickpea dishes is usually the amount of olive oil or butter in the recipe; 1 tablespoon (15 ml) of olive oil adds about 120 calories on its own. In tahini-based chickpea spreads such as hummus, tahini is high in calories; 1 tablespoon (15 ml) contains about 90 calories, so prepared hummus has noticeably more calories than plain cooked chickpeas.

How do chickpeas compare with white beans?
Cooked white beans contain about 130–140 calories per 100 g, slightly less than cooked chickpeas. Although the two legumes are similar, chickpeas are said to have a little more fat, while beans have more starch. As with white-bean stew made with meat, adding meat or sausage to chickpea dishes can significantly raise the total calories compared with the plain version; the difference generally comes more from the additions than from the legumes themselves.

Quick summary
A bowl of cooked chickpeas has about 240–250 calories, and canned chickpeas are roughly similar. Roasting or adding tahini can substantially increase the number. Plain cooked chickpeas remain a filling, relatively low-calorie option among legumes.
