How Many Calories Are in a Portion of Baked Vegetable Casserole?

A portion (about 300 grams) of olive-oil baked vegetable casserole comes to roughly 210 calories. The figure can shift noticeably depending on the mix of vegetables used and how much oil goes in. Most of the vegetables in a casserole — eggplant, zucchini, pepper, tomato — are low-calorie; most of the calories come from the olive oil added before baking. Does baking in a clay pot versus a baking dish matter? A casserole baked as a single portion in a small clay pot carries almost the same calories as one baked in a large tray; the real difference isn't the vessel, it's the vegetable-to-oil ratio per pot. A clay pot distributes heat more slowly, which can stretch out cooking time a little; that doesn't measurably change the calories, only the texture. How many calories does cheese add? Casserole topped with kashar or white cheese carries 70-100 more calories per portion than the plain version; the more cheese used, the larger that gap grows. Melting the cheese in the oven for just the last few minutes rather than adding a thick layer from the start can mean using less cheese overall — a small change that saves a few calories per portion. How does it compare with a meat version? A meat-based baked casserole carries 80-120 more calories per portion than the vegetable-only version; the fat content of the meat used, diced or minced, directly decides that gap. The vegetable version is lower in calories than the meat one, but it carries more fiber, which makes it a more filling option for longer. Serving the casserole with a leafy salad instead of bread noticeably lowers the meal's total calories while keeping most of the fullness intact. Does skipping the sauté step make a difference? Putting the vegetables straight into the oven without sautéing them first skips a step and saves a noticeable amount of calories per portion; the vegetables still soften, cooking in their own liquid. Sautéing usually adds a deeper flavor, but a long bake can achieve a similar caramelized effect without the oil. What meals can you serve casserole with? Baked vegetable casserole works as a main dish for either lunch or dinner; eaten on its own it can feel light on protein, so adding a source like egg, cheese or yogurt on the side helps balance the meal. A large tray of casserole split among more people noticeably changes the calories per person; sharing a tray between four instead of two cuts the per-portion total by nearly half. Does reheating the next day change the calories? Casserole cooled and kept in the fridge can look a bit richer when reheated the next day, but its calories stay practically the same as the first day. The small amount of water that evaporates during reheating changes the appearance but adds or removes nothing from the total calories. Salting the casserole doesn't affect calories either; salt only sharpens the flavor and adds nothing to the energy value. A spoonful of yogurt added on top before serving, in place of bread, boosts the meal's fullness while keeping the total lower than reaching for bread would.
