Odors can linger after frying, sautéing onions, or cooking fish. To reduce them, run a range hood that exhausts outdoors while cooking; open a window when outdoor air and safety conditions permit. Clean grease and food residue regularly and maintain the hood filter according to its manufacturer’s instructions.
Aromas such as lemon peel or bay leaves may mask cooking smells; do not assume they remove airborne pollutants. Do not burn tea leaves to produce smoke or treat candle burning as an air-cleaning method. Do not leave the stove on unnecessarily; if oil is smoking, stop cooking and check the heat. Reducing the source and ventilating are the basic approaches.
