Flaxseed has traditionally been used in skin and hair care. Boiling it in water creates a gel-like texture that can be used to make a hair mask. Although the mask is simple to prepare, the proportions and application time affect the result. Anyone with skin sensitivity or allergies should be cautious and consult a doctor before trying a new personal-care product. Here are the ingredients, preparation steps, and some ways to use flaxseed in the kitchen.
What you’ll need
The amount of hair mask depends on hair length, but 1 tablespoon (15 ml) of flaxseed and two 200 ml measures of water are usually enough. Increase the amount for longer hair. Adding 3 drops of apricot kernel oil is optional and gives the hair a slight shine and a wet look. Choose dry, odorless, glossy brown flaxseeds; clumped or damp-looking seeds may have lost freshness. Use room-temperature or slightly warm water. Water that is too hot can make the mixture thicken in an undesirable way.
How to make the gel
Put the flaxseed and water in a small saucepan and bring to a gentle boil over low heat. As it boils, the mixture thickens and takes on a gel-like consistency. Stir continuously to keep it from sticking to the bottom or clumping. Once it reaches the desired consistency, remove it from the heat and let it cool to room temperature. Do not apply the hot mixture directly to your hair. For a smoother gel, strain the cooled mixture through a fine-mesh strainer to remove the seeds.
How to apply it
Spread a thin layer of the cooled gel through your hair, from the roots to the ends. If desired, stir the apricot kernel oil into the mixture at this stage or apply it separately. Leave the gel in your hair for about 1–2 hours, then wash it out thoroughly with shampoo and conditioner. Rinse carefully to avoid leaving residue in your hair. Traditional use recommends repeating this treatment once a week.
How long does it keep?
Store the prepared flaxseed gel in an airtight jar in the refrigerator for about 1 week. Do not use it if its smell or consistency changes. Stir the jar gently before each use to keep the gel uniform. For longer storage, pour the gel into ice cube trays and freeze it. On the day you plan to use it, take out one cube and thaw it at room temperature. Freezing also avoids having to make a small fresh batch each time.
How can flaxseed be used in the kitchen?
Flaxseed is also a common food ingredient. Grind it and add it to yogurt, muesli, or bread dough. It can contribute fiber and omega-3 fatty acids to the diet. Store whole flaxseed in an airtight container in a cool, dark place. Ground flaxseed turns rancid faster than whole seeds, so use it soon after grinding. Moderate daily portions of 1–2 tablespoons (15 ml each) are recommended.
