Artichoke water, also known as an artichoke cleanse, is a drink made by boiling artichoke leaves in plenty of water. This cleanse is thought to support the liver and can be prepared easily at home with a few ingredients. The water made by boiling the leaves, described as the healthiest part of the artichoke, is said to provide the most noticeable benefit when consumed fresh. Below are the ingredients, preparation steps, and suggested consumption guidance.
Ingredients for Artichoke Water
To make artichoke water, you need 1 liter of water, 3 fresh artichokes, and a few lemon slices if desired. Choose fresh artichokes with tightly closed, bright green leaves; freshness affects both the flavor and quality of the drink.
If adding lemon, use freshly squeezed lemon juice. Compared with bottled lemon juice, fresh juice gives a brighter flavor and has a higher vitamin C content. Trim the stems and remove the outer leaves before washing the artichokes.
How to Make Artichoke Water
First, wash the artichoke leaves thoroughly in plenty of water. Pour 1 liter of water into a pot and bring it to a boil. Once the water boils, add the artichoke leaves, reduce the heat, and simmer over low heat.
When the artichokes soften and begin to color the water, turn off the heat and let the mixture steep. Once steeping is complete, strain the prepared drink through a sieve into a glass. Serve it warm or cold.
Cooking Time and Consistency
It takes about 20–25 minutes for the artichoke leaves to release all their liquid. The recommendation is to simmer over low heat during this time with the pot lid half open. If boiled over very high heat, the water may reduce quickly and the drink may become more concentrated than expected, giving it a sharper flavor.
After the artichoke leaves are added, the water gradually turns greenish; this color change is described as an indication that compounds from the artichoke have entered the water. If the water becomes too concentrated, add a little hot water to adjust the consistency. This softens the flavor and increases the number of servings.
How to Drink Artichoke Water
Freshly prepared artichoke water may be consumed 2–3 times a day before meals. Since it is thought to lose its benefits as it loses freshness, prepare only enough for a few days rather than making a large amount to store for a long time.
Artichoke water stored in the refrigerator should be consumed within 2–3 days; after that, it loses much of its freshness and aroma. Let it come to room temperature before drinking to make its flavor more noticeable.
Precautions
Do not assume that artichoke water cannot cause serious adverse effects. If you take medication regularly or have a liver, gallbladder, or bile-duct condition, consult a doctor before drinking it; do not consume it if you are allergic to artichoke.
Artichoke water is not a substitute for treatment or a balanced diet. Safety information about herbal medicines containing artichoke leaf does not by itself establish the safety of homemade artichoke water of unknown composition. Use a clean, food-safe vessel to prepare it.
