The most effective way to remove odors from a food storage container is to mix 1 tablespoon of baking powder with a little water to make a paste, spread it over the inside of the container, and leave it overnight without closing the lid. Baking powder neutralizes the acidic and sulfur compounds that cause odors instead of masking them, so the result lasts. This method works especially well for odors left in plastic by strongly scented foods such as onions, garlic, fish, and pickles. Rinse the container thoroughly with water the next day, and most of the smell will be gone.

How to use the baking powder scrubbing method
Mix baking powder with a small amount of water and use a sponge to spread it over every surface of the container, especially the edges and corners. Leave the container uncovered so the baking powder can continue absorbing odors from the air. In the morning, rinse it thoroughly with water; most odors and any light stains will be gone. For stubborn odors, repeat the process 1 more time. You do not need gloves when applying the paste; baking powder is mild enough not to harm the skin.

How does drying in the sun help?
Leaving a washed container uncovered in the sun for a few hours allows ultraviolet light from the sun to help break down some odor-causing compounds. This method works better when used with baking powder. Direct sunlight can also fade plastic over time, so limiting the process to a few hours is enough.

Why does crumpled paper absorb odors?
When crumpled newspaper or a paper towel is placed inside the container and the lid is closed, the paper’s porous structure absorbs moisture and odor molecules from the air, reducing the smell. This method works overnight and is a good alternative when baking powder is unavailable. Replace the paper if it becomes damp and swollen; wet paper may leave its own smell instead of absorbing odors.

Which containers hold odors longer?
Containers made of soft, flexible plastic absorb odors more deeply than rigid plastic containers because their porous structure allows odor molecules to penetrate. This effect is more noticeable in containers that have held strongly colored or scented foods, such as red pepper and garlic, for a long time. Glass holds odors and stains much less than plastic; choosing glass for frequently used, strongly scented foods helps extend a container’s useful life.

How can you prevent odors from returning?
Closing a washed container before it is completely dry creates a damp environment where new odors can develop, so let it air-dry completely before using it. Keeping a separate set of containers for strongly scented foods also reduces odor problems. The lid’s gasket can hold odors, too; remove and wash it separately to prevent smells from coming from the lid even when the rest of the container is clean. If the gasket is dishwasher-safe, washing it in the dishwasher cleans it more thoroughly than scrubbing by hand.

The most effective way to remove odors from a storage container is to leave a baking powder paste on it overnight; drying it in the sun and using crumpled paper are additional options. Soft plastic holds odors more deeply than glass. Let containers dry completely before closing them and wash the gasket separately to help prevent odors from returning.

Sarımsak koktu diye attığım bir kabı son kez kabartma tozu macunuyla denedim, bir gece bekletince gerçekten koku büyük ölçüde gitti. Keşke daha önce denemiş olsaydım, birkaç kabı boşuna çöpe atmışım.
