Glass and plastic containers suit different uses; the material's name alone does not establish safety. Check suitability for food contact and the intended temperature.
Glass. Not every glass container withstands ovens, microwaves, or sudden temperature changes. Follow the manufacturer's heating and cooling instructions. Do not store food or drinks in lead crystal.
Plastic. Lightweight containers can be convenient for transport; choose products suitable for the intended food and temperature. BPA-free labeling or a recycling code does not mean oven or microwave suitability. Read separate instructions for microwave, dishwasher, and freezer use. Do not use damaged containers, those that cannot be cleaned, or those with a persistent unpleasant odor for food.
Lids and size. A leak-resistant lid aids transport; check that seals and lids are intact. Airtight or vacuum containers do not remove the refrigeration requirement for perishable foods. Appropriately sized shallow containers aid rapid cooling. Divide hot food into suitable containers and chill promptly.
