If you do not have plastic wrap, the most reliable alternative is to transfer the food to a storage container with a lid; if you do not have a container, aluminum foil works, and beeswax wrap offers similar protection if you want a reusable option.

When is transferring food to a lidded container the best solution?
For leftovers that will be kept in the refrigerator for a few days, transferring food to a lidded container is the healthiest method; it seals more tightly than plastic wrap and also prevents acidic foods such as tomato sauce from coming into direct contact with plastic. If you do not have a lidded container of a suitable size, you can temporarily seal a bowl by turning another bowl of the same size upside down over it.

How can aluminum foil be used instead of plastic wrap?
Aluminum foil is a practical way to cover a bowl or pot, but it should never be used in a microwave and should not remain in direct contact with acidic foods such as tomato paste or lemon for a long time; acid can cause small amounts of aluminum from the foil to transfer into food. This risk is low for short-term refrigerator storage, but using parchment paper as a barrier is recommended for acidic dishes that will be kept every other day.

Does placing another plate over a dish work?
To cover a bowl that needs to be put in the refrigerator in a hurry, placing an upside-down plate of a similar diameter on top works well as a short-term solution; although it does not completely block air, it greatly reduces odors from spreading to other foods. For long-term storage, this method should always be replaced by a lidded container.

How is beeswax wrap used?
Beeswax wrap can be shaped with the warmth of your hands around a bowl or food, washed, and reused. It provides protection very similar to plastic wrap for foods such as cut fruit and vegetables and bread. However, beeswax wrap is not recommended for high-risk foods such as raw meat and chicken because bacteria may remain in its pores even after washing.

What can replace plastic wrap for food going into the freezer?
Plastic wrap is not an ideal freezer option because it loosens over time and does not provide enough protection against freezer burn (ice crystal formation); resealable freezer bags or airtight containers are much more reliable. If using a bag, pushing out as much air as possible by hand before sealing gives a result closest to the tight covering of plastic wrap. Whatever alternative you choose, the goal is always to prevent drying and odor transfer caused by exposure to air; any closed covering that serves this purpose can replace plastic wrap to a large extent.

Can hot food be covered with plastic wrap?
It is not a good idea to stretch plastic wrap or foil directly over a pot or bowl while the food is still hot; steam can condense, drip onto the food, and excess moisture can speed spoilage. So you can let food cool briefly before covering it; but whichever covering method you choose, the key safety step is to divide large amounts into shallow containers and refrigerate them within 2 hours of cooking. Hot food can also go directly into the refrigerator.

Streç filmim bitince kâseleri ters tabakla kapatmayı denedim, ertesi gün yemek hiç kurumamıştı, artık çoğu zaman bu yöntemi kullanıyorum.

Kesilmiş yarım soğanı mumlu bezle sardığımda buzdolabında kokusu diğer yiyeceklere neredeyse hiç karışmadı, streç filmden farkı yoktu.
