A wood-burning range cooker is a traditional stove still commonly used in rural homes for both heating and cooking. Its cooktop has stove-like openings where kitchen items such as a teapot or pot can be placed to heat or cook. A range cooker with an oven can also bake pastries such as poğaça and börek; its heat is said to give food a distinctive aroma. Below are tips on fuel selection, regular cleaning, and safety.

The Role of a Range Cooker in the Kitchen

Range cookers are among the most common and practical types of stove: they can heat a room and cook food on the cooktop. Pots and teapots on the cooktop openings can be kept at a low, steady heat for a long time, making the stove suitable for slow-cooked dishes. Range cookers with an oven can bake pastries such as poğaça and börek; the heat from a wood fire is said to give food a different aroma than an electric oven. Wood is generally used as fuel, while adding coal can extend the fire's strength and duration.

How Should Daily Cleaning Be Done?

Cleaning the stove is an important part of daily use. Burning wood and coal, especially when coal does not burn completely, can release gases that may be harmful to breathe. Empty the ash pan regularly each morning or evening; clearing accumulated ash helps the fire burn cleanly without smothering it. Make sure the stove and the ashes are completely cool before emptying it. Hot ash placed in a plastic bag or a combustible container can start a fire. A safer approach is to keep ashes in a tightly covered metal container at least 3 meters (10 feet) from the home and other buildings, separate from other trash.

Flue and Chimney Maintenance

Clean the inside of the stove pipes once a month with a rod. This helps smoke escape more easily and reduces the risk of a blockage. Soot buildup in the pipes can cause smoke to flow back into the room over time. Have the chimney cleaned annually by the fire department or a qualified service provider. Regular chimney cleaning supports efficient burning and is an important measure for reducing the risk of a chimney fire.

Fuel Selection and Efficient Burning

Using dry wood as fuel in a range cooker produces a cleaner fire and reduces soot buildup. Wet or green wood produces more smoke and accelerates soot buildup in the chimney. Choose well-seasoned wood that is cracked and lightweight. Adding coal extends the fire, but the stove's air intake must be adjusted so the coal can burn completely; insufficient airflow can cause incomplete combustion and excess smoke. For this reason, rooms with coal-burning stoves need regular ventilation.

Important Safety Precautions

Regularly refresh the air in rooms where stoves are used in enclosed spaces to help prevent a possible buildup of gases. Keeping a carbon monoxide (CO) alarm in the home is a simple but effective way to notice a leak of this colorless, odorless gas early; ventilation is not a substitute for an alarm. Do not neglect cleaning and maintenance; poorly maintained stoves burn inefficiently and pose a safety risk. If you notice a chimney or stove malfunction, consult a professional before continuing to use it.
