Bee bread, also called perga, is a pollen-derived bee product stored by bees in the hive. Bees collect pollen and nectar and store them in honeycomb; this food is used to nourish developing brood. Its role in bee nutrition does not prove a particular health benefit in humans.

How Is Perga Formed?
Pollen stored in honeycomb cells is known in beekeeping as bee bread. Its composition can vary with plant sources and processing. Fermentation does not mean that it is necessarily easier for people to digest or that its nutrients are better absorbed. Do not assume high vitamin, mineral or protein levels for every product; examine product-specific nutrition information if available.

How Is It Consumed?
Consider only products sold for human consumption with an identifiable source and ingredient list. Dried products, powders, capsules and tablets do not have the same method of use or dose. Follow the label instructions; no daily dose for all perga products is recommended here. If considering a supplement, consult a health professional, particularly in relation to medication, illness, pregnancy, breastfeeding or use by children.

Culinary Uses
If the label of a product sold as food permits it, it may be mixed with foods such as yogurt or honey. This is only a serving option; mixing does not guarantee digestive or intestinal benefits. Do not use bee bread in place of treatment for any illness.

Buying and Storage
Check the producer, ingredients, packaging integrity and date information. Being sold in a pharmacy or herbal shop does not alone prove effectiveness or safety. Follow only the storage instructions specific to the product; there is no common rule directing all capsules to room temperature or all dried products to the refrigerator. Ask the manufacturer if the instructions are unclear.

Points to Consider
If you have a history of allergy to pollen or bee products, do not test safety by trying the product on your own. Bee products can cause allergic reactions; consult an allergy specialist before use. Being natural or fermented does not make a product suitable for everyone.
