Forshmak is a no-cook Ukrainian appetizer made by processing salted herring with hard-boiled egg, apple, and onion until smooth. Balancing the herring’s saltiness with the apple’s sweetness takes care. Spread it on a slice of bread for breakfast, pack it in a lunchbox, or carry it in a sealed container to a picnic.

Step by Step

How to make it?

1

Desalt the herring

30 min

Soak the herring in cold water for at least 30 minutes, changing the water to reduce its saltiness.

2

Process the ingredients

10 min

Process the herring with the hard-boiled egg, apple, and onion in a food processor until smooth.

3

Adjust the seasoning

3 min

Add the olive oil and lemon juice and mix. Taste and adjust the balance.

4

Serve

2 min

Transfer the spread to a container and chill it in the refrigerator before serving.

Reminder

Soak the herring in cold water for at least 30 minutes before processing to reduce its saltiness; otherwise, the spread may be too salty. Contains fish and egg.

Editör notundaki gibi elma yerine armut kullandım, ezme gerçekten daha az ekşi ve çok daha yumuşak bir tat kazandı, ailem bu hâlini daha çok sevdi.
