Pau, a soft steamed bun inherited from Malaysia’s Chinese communities, is made from yeasted dough and cooked without oil. Because it needs no frying or baking, it is a light choice for breakfast or a lunchbox.

Step by Step

How to make it?

1

Knead the dough

45 min

Mix the flour, granulated sugar, instant dried yeast, baking powder and salt in a bowl. Add the lukewarm water and sunflower oil, knead until the dough is smooth, then leave it to rise for 45 minutes.

2

Shape the buns

15 min

Divide the risen dough into eight equal pieces and roll them into balls. Place a piece of parchment paper under each and leave them to rest for another 15 minutes.

3

Steam the buns

15 min

Steam the pau over high heat for 15 minutes with the lid closed. Check on them occasionally without opening the lid.

Reminder

Do not open the lid too often while steaming, or the pau may wrinkle on top. Allergen: contains wheat (gluten).
