These Ukrainian table snacks use stale rye bread: the pieces are toasted in garlic oil until crisp on the outside while remaining soft inside. They are served in a large bowl for sharing at a gathering.

Step by Step

How to make it?

1

Prepare the bread

5 min

Cut the stale rye bread into finger-thick pieces.

2

Steep the garlic in oil

5 min

Let the crushed garlic steep in olive oil in a skillet over very low heat for 5 minutes. Do not brown the garlic; let it release its aroma into the oil.

3

Toast the bread

12 min

Add the rye bread pieces to the garlic oil and toast over medium heat for 12 minutes, turning constantly, until crisp outside but still soft inside. Sprinkle with salt.

4

Serve

3 min

Garnish with chopped dill and bring to the table in a large bowl for sharing.

Reminder

Garlic turns bitter if it gets too hot in the oil. Take the pan off the heat briefly before adding the bread. Allergen: wheat (gluten).

Artan bayat ekmeğimizi böyle değerlendirmek hiç aklıma gelmemişti, borsçun yanında ikram edince kâse anında boşaldı.
