A guest table setting comes together by adding a little care and a sense of openness to the everyday table. The most important consideration is space: leaving enough room for everyone to eat comfortably without their elbows touching is half the battle.

At a large gathering, the flow of serving is just as important as the presentation. Place the main dishes in the center of the table and spread the mezze and salads around them so everyone can reach; placing a serving spoon beside each shared dish ahead of time keeps the meal moving smoothly.

Finishing touches such as flowers and candles make the table more beautiful, but avoid anything tall enough to block eye level so guests can talk comfortably across the table.

Tips

Small touches that make a difference

Leave at least 60 cm of space for each guest so elbows do not touch.
Arrange the main dishes in the center and spread the mezze and salads around them.
Place a serving spoon and serving tongs beside each shared dish ahead of time.
Use flowers or candles, but avoid arrangements tall enough to block eye level.
Arrange glasses at the upper-right corner of the plate; serve water and other drinks in separate glasses.
Bring hot dishes to the table as close to serving time as possible.
