How Many Calories Are in a Serving of Pesto Pasta?

One serving (about 250 g of cooked pasta with two tablespoons of pesto) contains around 420 calories. This value can vary noticeably depending on the amounts of oil and hazelnuts in the pesto. Pesto is a calorie-dense sauce made with basil, pine nuts, Parmesan cheese, and plenty of olive oil; the same serving of pasta contains far more calories with pesto than with tomato sauce.

What determines pesto's calorie content? One tablespoon of classic pesto contains around 80–100 calories, depending on the amounts of olive oil and pine nuts used; adding two spoonfuls can easily bring that figure to 200 calories. Versions made with walnuts or almonds instead of pine nuts fall within a similar calorie range. The main difference comes from the total amount of oil in the pesto, not the type of nut used.

How does it compare with pasta in tomato sauce? A serving of pasta with tomato sauce usually contains around 350–380 calories, while the pesto version can reach 420–450 calories; the difference comes largely from the fat content of the sauce. Cream sauces are higher in calories than both. Pesto is in the middle: lower than cream sauce but higher than tomato sauce.

Are there ways to lighten pesto pasta? Limiting the pesto to one spoonful keeps most of the pasta's flavor while noticeably reducing the total calories; a little grated lemon zest can add back some flavor. Thinning the pesto with some of the pasta water spreads the same amount of pesto over a larger volume. This does not reduce the actual amount of fat, but it distributes it more thinly per serving. Using whole-wheat pasta does not change the calories much, but it increases the fiber content and keeps the meal satisfying for longer, which may indirectly reduce the chance of having a second serving.

How much does Parmesan affect the calories? Parmesan in the pesto contributes noticeably to the sauce's calories; one tablespoon of grated Parmesan contains about 20 calories. Sprinkling extra cheese on top raises the total further. Choosing a recipe with less cheese changes pesto's characteristic flavor slightly but lowers the calories somewhat.

Is there a difference between homemade and jarred pesto? Jarred pesto usually contains more oil to extend its shelf life, which can mean a few extra calories per tablespoon compared with homemade pesto. Since the cook controls the amount of oil in homemade pesto, a version made with less oil can be noticeably lower in calories than a jarred one.

How is pesto used in other dishes? Pesto is used not only on pasta but also in sandwiches, with grilled vegetables, and in salad dressing; the same calorie principle applies in these uses: the more pesto, the more calories. A thin layer of pesto on a slice of toast contains far fewer calories than the two spoonfuls added to a serving of pasta; the way the sauce is used determines the total intake.

Pestoyu marketten hazır mı alıyorsunuz yoksa evde mi yapıyorsunuz, çünkü hazır kavanoz pestolarda yağ oranının ev yapımına göre daha yüksek olduğunu duymuştum ve merak ettim.
