How Many Calories Are in a Tablespoon of Cream Cheese?

One tablespoon (about 15 g) of regular cream cheese contains around 50 calories. This value may vary by a few calories from brand to brand depending on fat content. Most of the calories in cream cheese come from milk fat, which also gives it a soft, spreadable texture.

How much difference does the low-fat version make? The same amount of low-fat cream cheese can contain as little as 30–35 calories. As the fat content decreases, the texture may become a little runnier and less creamy. Some low-fat products contain added starch or gums to make up for the lost texture; these additives do not noticeably change the calorie count, but they do affect the texture.

How does it compare with other cheeses? Cream cheese generally has fewer calories per gram than white brined cheese or Turkish kashar cheese because it contains more water. However, because it is difficult to control how much is spread, people may use more in practice. Turkish lor curd cheese is a lower-calorie alternative to cream cheese; although its texture is somewhat lumpier, it can serve a similar purpose in a sandwich.

When can cream cheese quickly add calories? A thick layer on a bagel or Turkish simit can contain much more than one tablespoon. Measuring it with a spoon instead of estimating by eye is a practical way to see how much you are actually using. Cream cheese in desserts such as cheesecake becomes much higher in calories when combined with sugar; a slice of cheesecake can easily contain more calories than several tablespoons of cream cheese. Cream cheese used in small amounts as a dip for sausages or vegetable sticks adds relatively little to a meal's total; the amount used is the main consideration.

How do flavored cream cheeses affect the calorie count? Herb, garlic, or salmon cream cheese usually contains 5–15 more calories than the plain version. Since the amount of added ingredients is small, the difference is modest. Sweet flavors such as strawberry or honey contain sugar and are noticeably higher in calories than plain or savory versions; one tablespoon can contain up to 65–70 calories.

How should cream cheese be stored? Keep an opened tub tightly sealed in the refrigerator. Do not leave cream cheese at room temperature for more than 2 hours in total, or 1 hour if it is above 32°C / 90°F, though its calorie content does not change substantially during that time. Frozen cream cheese may separate when thawed and become difficult to spread. This does not affect its calories but makes it less convenient to use, so consume it soon rather than freezing it. Using a squeeze bottle for cream cheese instead of a spoon may make it easier to dispense a measured amount rather than estimating by eye; this small change may help keep daily intake in check. Softening cream cheese briefly at room temperature makes it easier to spread but does not change its calories; temperature affects only its texture. Mixing cream cheese with butter to make it easier to spread combines the calories of both ingredients, resulting in a higher total.

Az yağlı krem peynire geçtim ve sabah kahvaltısında kalorimin belirgin şekilde düştüğünü fark ettim, kıvamı biraz daha sulu ama simide sürünce yine de gayet iyi.
