How to Clean the Inside of a Microwave

Clean the inside of a microwave with steam, not by scrubbing. Heat water and a few lemon slices in a heat-safe container; the steam that condenses softens dried splatters, which can then be wiped away in one pass. Abrasive powders and steel wool scratch the inner coating, and a scratch can later become a source of sparks. Do not remove the mica panel on the ceiling; wipe it in place.

The inside of a microwave is a metal box with a thin coating, and that coating is important for the appliance to work. Heating happens when waves reflect off the metal walls and hit the food. As long as the surface stays smooth, the reflections proceed evenly. A scratch or a peeled spot in the coating exposes the metal underneath, and that spot can eventually spark. That is why the main rule for cleaning a microwave is to avoid abrading the interior surface; do not scrape dirt off the surface—soften it first.

The easiest way to soften residue is to use the appliance’s own heat. Put water in a wide, heat-safe container, add a few slices of lemon or a spoonful of vinegar, and run the microwave on high. Continue until you can see condensation on the inner glass and ceiling; the time depends on the appliance’s power, so judge by sight rather than by the clock. Then wait a few minutes without opening the door; the steam that condenses inside wets dried splatters and loosens the residue.

When the waiting time is over, remove the container carefully because the water is very hot, and liquid heated in a microwave may suddenly boil when the container is moved. Wipe the ceiling, walls, floor, and inside of the door with a soft, damp cloth; loosened residue usually comes off in one pass. Remove the turntable and the support ring beneath it and wash them separately. Wipe the gasket surface along the inner edge of the door too, because residue there can prevent the door from closing fully. The second benefit of lemon is that it absorbs odors.

The list of things to avoid is short. Abrasive scouring powder, steel wool, metal scouring pads, and metal scrapers scratch the inner coating. Do not use oven cleaner in a microwave. Do not spray cleaners directly onto the interior surface; liquid can seep through the ventilation openings into the electronics compartment. If a cleaner is needed, spray it onto the cloth, not the surface. If there is visible peeling or rust on the coating, cleaning will not fix the appliance; because exposed metal can arc, stop using the microwave and ask an authorized service center.

One part is especially easy to mistake: a thin panel with the appearance of light brown cardboard may be on the side wall or ceiling of the appliance. This is the mica panel, and it covers the opening of the waveguide; a common mistake is to think it is a dirty piece of cardboard and remove it. Do not remove the panel; wipe it with a dry or slightly damp cloth. If it has a scorch mark, hole, or bulge, it needs to be replaced. The best habit for making cleanup easier is to cover the container being heated; if oil never splatters, cleaning takes less time.

Beş dakika çalıştırıp on dakika kapağı açmadan beklettim. Tek dikkat edilecek şey kabı çıkarırken suyun çok sıcak olması, bez ya da tutacak gerekiyor.
