Fruits grown in different regions vary in appearance, aroma and edible parts. Before using an unfamiliar exotic fruit, learn its identity and how to prepare it safely; not every fruit's skin or seed is edible.

Ackee and Rambutan
Only the edible flesh of fully ripe, properly processed ackee, a fruit native to West Africa, should be eaten. Unripe fruit and the seeds and rind of ripe fruit must not be eaten; cooking does not make unripe ackee safe. Do not prepare raw ackee yourself unless trained in proper processing; choose a properly processed product from a reliable manufacturer. Rambutan has white, juicy flesh inside its hairy-looking rind; separate the rind and seed and eat the flesh.

Jabuticaba and Kiwano
Jabuticaba is a fruit native to South America that may be eaten fresh or used in beverages. Fruiting age depends on the variety and propagation method; not every tree can be said to take about 20 years. Kiwano is recognizable by its spiny rind and jelly-like interior. Use products sold as food according to information about their edible parts and preparation; do not treat this appearance as sufficient identification for similar wild fruits.

Durian and Mangosteen
Durian is known for its spiny rind, distinctive smell and creamy flesh. Mangosteen contains white, juicy segments inside a thick rind. Open the fruit on a stable surface, keeping your hand away from the cutting tool, and separate the edible flesh.

What Is Special About Miracle Berry?
Miracle berry can make sour flavors taste sweet because of a substance called miraculin. This changes taste perception; it is not a test of food safety.

Buying and Storage
Do not apply the same squeezing, color or ripening rule to every species. Avoid damaged or rotten fruit and follow the product's preparation and storage instructions. Keep cut fruit in a covered container in the refrigerator. Eating a small amount does not prove the absence of an allergy; if you have a history suggesting an allergy, consult a health professional instead of trying it on your own.
