What Goes with a Charcuterie Board?

Bread and pickles are the most classic accompaniments to a charcuterie board. Baguette slices, crackers, or whole-grain bread provide a neutral base that balances the intense flavor of salami and sausage, while the acidity of pickles lightens the richness of the fatty meat. How should you pair cheese and fruit? Serving firm cheeses (kashar cheese and aged cheese) alongside soft cheeses (Brie and goat cheese) brings variety to the board with both salty and creamy flavors. Fruits such as raisins, dried apricots, and fresh grapes add a sweet-salty balance; grapes in particular create a refreshing contrast with the rich texture of salami. Which sauces and condiments should you include? Mustard, especially whole-grain mustard, is one of the most popular condiments with charcuterie; its sharp flavor balances the richness of processed meat. Olives and pickles are also classic parts of the board. Serving black and green olives together adds visual and flavor variety. A sweet condiment such as honey or fig jam provides balance, especially alongside firm cheeses. What drinks pair with a charcuterie board? Dry red wine or sparkling drinks are common pairings. For an alcohol-free table, tart fruit juices or şalgam (fermented turnip juice) provide a similar balance. Among hot drinks, strongly brewed tea in particular leaves a refreshing sensation after the board's salty, fatty flavors. How should you arrange the board? Place foods with different textures—firm cheese, soft cheese, cured meat, and fresh fruit—in separate areas of the board. This creates a neat presentation and helps guests sample the flavors without mixing them. For a larger gathering, plan on about 80–100 grams of charcuterie and 40–50 grams of cheese per person so the board looks neither too sparse nor too crowded. Which pairings should you avoid? Very spicy or hot sauces are generally avoided because they may overpower the foods' own flavors. The purpose of the variety on the board is to offer different salty-sweet balances, not one dominant flavor. Serving very sweet pastries or syrup-soaked desserts at the same time is also not recommended because the flavors may clash; serve dessert separately. If there are vegetarian guests, add meat-free items such as roasted almonds, marinated mushrooms, or roasted peppers to one area of the board to make it accessible to everyone. These additions increase variety without disrupting the board's overall texture. Timing matters too: remove the cheeses from the refrigerator at least 30 minutes before serving and let them come to room temperature, since cold cheese does not fully release its aroma or texture. The thickness of the salami slices also affects the balance of the board. Thin slices are easy to fold and place on bread, while thicker slices offer a more substantial bite on their own.
