Dark circles under the eyes can have many causes, including fatigue, genetics, and lack of sleep. They are a cosmetic concern, and some common household ingredients may help lessen their appearance before people turn to commercial products. Options available in the kitchen include cucumber, potato, tea bags, and parsley; applying them regularly to the under-eye area may have a supportive effect.

Cucumber and Tea-Bag Applications

Cucumber is about 96% water and is described as moisturizing, soothing, and cooling for the under-eye skin. Chill thin cucumber slices in the refrigerator and place them over closed eyelids for 10–15 minutes, or apply cucumber juice with cotton. Another common method is placing a used, warm tea bag on the under-eye area for about 15 minutes. Green tea bags are often chosen for this use because of their compounds.

Potato for Puffiness

Potato is thought to help reduce under-eye puffiness and soften the appearance of dark circles. Place thin slices of raw potato under the eyes or grate it and apply it in a piece of gauze; grated potato releases its juice more easily. Chill the potato for a few minutes before slicing. Leave the application on for 10–15 minutes, then rinse the area with lukewarm water. Repeat this several times a week for a more noticeable difference.

Parsley and Lemon Juice

Parsley may help dark circles associated with vitamin C or K deficiency because it contains these vitamins. Finely chop parsley, steep it in hot water for a few minutes, let it cool, and apply it with gauze. Do not apply lemon juice around the eyes: it can irritate the thin skin there, and citrus juice on the skin can react with sunlight and cause a blistering rash or painful swelling.

A Milk Compress

Cold milk may lighten dark circles and make them blend better with the skin's natural color. Dip cotton in milk, squeeze out excess liquid, and apply it under the eyes for about 10 minutes. The cotton should not be too wet, to reduce the chance of milk entering the eyes. Whole milk may help moisturize the skin. Rinse the area with lukewarm water afterward to remove milk residue and avoid a sticky feeling.

General Tips for Preventing Dark Circles

Regular sleep, adequate fluids, and a balanced diet are described as supportive factors that may help reduce dark circles. Regularly eating foods containing vitamins B, C, E, and K may also help. These home methods may provide temporary comfort. If dark circles persist or become increasingly pronounced, consult a healthcare professional to investigate possible underlying causes. Using sunscreen formulated for the eye area is also suggested as a preventive step.
