Boiling: More Than Just Water
Learn to boil vegetables in water and gently steam them, and learn when to use each method.
What Will You Learn in This Lesson?
- Set the salt level in boiling water correctly
- Boil green vegetables while preserving their color
- Shock vegetables at the right time
- Set up a steamer correctly with respect to water level and lid use
- Choose the right method for the situation: boiling or steaming
Equipment You’ll Need
Required
- Large pot
- Strainer
- Bowl for ice and cold water
- Steamer basket or insert
Optional
- Kitchen thermometer (for fish or chicken)
Alternative
- If you do not have a steamer basket: use a metal strainer that fits inside the pot and a lid.
Safety
- Be careful when bringing your hands or face near boiling water or steam; a steam burn can be deeper than a water burn.
- Do not let all the water in the steamer boil away; the pot can be damaged and a fire may result.
- When steaming proteins such as fish and chicken, verify the internal temperature with a thermometer.
