Color and Texture Balance
Learn how to create color contrast and textural variety on a plate, and achieve visual balance without overdoing it.
What Will You Learn in This Lesson?
- Create strong contrast using complementary colors on the color wheel.
- Identify and correct a monochromatic plate.
- Add at least one crunchy element at the right time.
- Balance creamy and crunchy textures in the same bite.
- Limit color and texture variety to two or three clear contrasts without overdoing it.
Equipment You’ll Need
Required
- 3–4 ingredients in different colors
- Small tasting plates
- A white serving plate for color contrast
Optional
- Colorful garnish (microgreens, edible flowers)
- A phone for taking photos
Alternative
- If you do not have a white plate, any plain, unpatterned plate is enough for comparing colors.
Safety
- Do not assume color reliably indicates doneness; check the internal temperature of meat or chicken with a thermometer, not by color.
- Wash raw ingredients, such as fresh herbs added for textural contrast, separately; do not cut them on the same board as cooked food.
