Oven Cooking Techniques
Learn the basics of oven cooking, from preheating and choosing a rack to selecting a convection or conventional setting and choosing bakeware.
What Will You Learn in This Lesson?
- Preheat the oven until it reaches the target temperature
- Choose the correct rack position for the type of food
- Account for the temperature difference between convection and conventional settings
- Adjust the cooking time based on the bakeware material
- Check the safe internal temperature of foods such as chicken and fish cooked in the oven
Equipment You’ll Need
Required
- Oven
- Baking sheet or baking dish
- Oven mitt
Optional
- Oven thermometer
- Food thermometer (required to verify the safe internal temperature of chicken, ground meat, and fish)
Alternative
- Follow the oven manufacturer’s preheating instructions; simply waiting 10–15 minutes does not verify the display’s accuracy.
Safety
- Do not touch a hot baking sheet or rack with bare hands; use an oven mitt.
- Keep your face away from the hot steam that escapes when you open the oven door.
- Do not serve foods such as chicken, ground meat, or fish cooked in the oven without checking their internal temperature with a thermometer.
