- Measuring spoon set
- Mortar and pestle
- Fine-mesh sieve

Alternative
- If you do not have a mortar: put the spices in a resealable bag and crush them with a rolling pin
Safety
- Do not add ground spices very close to a pot of boiling liquid; rising steam can blow the powder into the air and make you cough.
- Do not leave the stove while toasting spices; they can burn and turn bitter within seconds.
- After handling chile peppers, wash your hands before touching your eyes or face.
