What Goes with a Cheese Plate?

The best pairing for a cheese plate is walnuts and honey, which set a sweet counterpoint against salty cheese. Sharp varieties like tulum cheese work well with a drizzle of honey, while milder cheeses like kashar pair nicely with walnuts or fig jam.

Next comes fresh or dried fruit: grapes, apples or dried apricots add a fresh contrast to cheese's salty edge. This trio — cheese, nuts and fruit — is the most common cheese plate arrangement on Turkish tables.

On Turkish tables, a cheese plate is usually served at breakfast or at the start of the meal as a meze; in French cuisine it instead becomes its own course before dessert. Both traditions follow the same logic: cheese balanced by sweet and savory elements.

Which sweet pairs with which cheese?

Sharp, salty cheeses — tulum, goat cheese — work best with honey; its sweetness softens the cheese's sharpness. Milder cheeses like kashar add a gentle sweetness to the plate when paired with fig or apricot jam.

How to choose the right nuts

Walnuts are the most common nut on a cheese plate since they pair with almost any cheese; almonds, with their more neutral taste, work better with milder cheeses. Hazelnuts are a good addition especially on plates that include honey.

Drink pairing

A cheese plate is usually paired with red grape juice or a light tea; a refreshing drink suits sharp cheeses, while a lighter option rounds out the plate when the cheese is something milder like kashar.

Bread and crisp pairings

Thinly sliced baguette or unsalted crackers, added alongside a cheese plate, bring a crisp texture without changing the cheese's flavor. Salted crackers are chosen less often, since combined with already-salty cheese they can push the plate too far in that direction.

How many cheeses should be on the plate?

A cheese plate is usually built from three to four different cheeses: one soft, one sharp and one somewhere in between. This variety lets the honey and jam on the plate be tried against different cheeses in different ways.

How does the type of jam affect the cheese?

Fig jam brings an intense sweetness alongside sharp cheeses, while apricot jam stays lighter and pairs more evenly with neutral cheeses like white cheese. Rose jam, served with lor cheese in particular, adds a delicate floral note to the plate.

Less common jams, such as tomato jam, can work surprisingly well with kashar cheese, striking a sweet-savory balance that is worth trying.

Why does serving temperature matter?

Cheese served straight from the fridge does not show its full flavor; taking it out about half an hour before serving lets it come closer to room temperature. This wait noticeably deepens the taste, especially for sharper cheeses.

In warm weather this waiting time can be shortened, since cheese reaches room temperature faster; in winter, the full half hour should be kept.
