Prepare the Apples
5 minSlice the apples and toss them with the lemon juice to keep them from browning.
Referring to Almaty, considered the apple’s place of origin, this recipe caramelizes sliced apples in butter and finishes them with honey and cinnamon. The caramel needs careful timing to keep it from burning.
Slice the apples and toss them with the lemon juice to keep them from browning.
Melt the butter in a skillet. Cook the apple slices over medium heat for 8 minutes, turning gently, until tender and lightly browned.
Add the honey and cinnamon and cook for 5 minutes more, until caramelized. Watch carefully because the honey burns quickly.
Serve warm, topped with the crushed walnuts.
Stay by the pan after adding the honey; it can burn quickly and turn bitter, even over low heat. Do not stir the apples too much, or the slices may break apart. Contains dairy and tree nuts (walnuts).
