This simple dessert uses leftover stale bread instead of letting it go to waste. Slices are lightly toasted in the oven, then soaked in sweet syrup. Served with cinnamon and walnuts, it is a practical classic for home meals.

Step by Step

How to make it?

1

Make the syrup

10 min

Put the sugar and water in a saucepan and bring to a boil. Simmer over low heat for 10 minutes, until slightly thickened.

2

Toast the bread

15 min

Arrange the stale bread slices on a baking sheet and bake in a preheated 180°C / 355°F oven for 15 minutes, until the edges are lightly browned.

3

Pour over the syrup

60 min

Slowly pour the warm syrup over the toasted bread slices and let them rest for 60 minutes so the bread absorbs all the syrup.

4

Serve

5 min

Sprinkle with cinnamon, garnish with chopped walnuts, and serve.

Reminder

Pour the syrup over the bread while it is warm, not hot, or the bread may become too soft and fall apart. Do not shorten the resting time; full absorption of the syrup determines the dessert’s texture. Contains wheat (gluten) and walnuts.

Ekmek dilimlerini fırında kızartırken tarifte yazan 15 dakika benim fırınımda biraz fazla geldi, kenarları çok koyulaştı. Süreyi 10 dakikaya indirsem şerbeti emme kıvamı bozulur mu, yoksa yine de iyi sonuç alır mıyım?
