Popular in South India, godhumai halwa is made by slowly roasting whole-wheat flour in butter and thickening it with syrup. Mashed banana adds natural sweetness and aroma.

Step by Step

How to make it?

1

Roast the flour

20 min

Melt the butter in a skillet and add the flour. Cook over low heat for 20 minutes, stirring constantly, until deep golden brown.

2

Add the banana

3 min

Add the mashed banana to the flour and cook, stirring, for 3 minutes.

3

Make and add the syrup

12 min

Boil the sugar and water in a separate pot to make a syrup. Gradually pour the hot syrup into the flour while stirring. Cook for 12 minutes, until the mixture thickens and pulls away from the sides of the pot.

4

Garnish with almonds and serve

2 min

Transfer the hot halwa to a plate, sprinkle with sliced almonds, and serve.

Reminder

Stay by the stove while roasting the flour; it can burn on the bottom within seconds if you do not stir constantly. Allergens: Contains wheat (gluten), dairy (butter), and tree nuts (almonds).
