Kik alicha is one of Ethiopia’s hearty fasting dishes. It is made by simmering yellow split peas with turmeric and ginger until soft and broken down. Simple yet filling, it pairs well with injera or rice.

Step by Step

How to make it?

1

Sauté the onion

8 min

Heat the olive oil in a pot and sauté the onion until softened. Add the garlic and ginger and sauté for 1 more minute.

2

Add the peas

3 min

Add the rinsed yellow split peas and turmeric and stir.

3

Simmer

35 min

Add the water and bring to a boil, then simmer over low heat for 35 minutes, until the peas are soft and breaking down.

4

Season and serve

3 min

Stir in the salt and serve hot.

Reminder

Skim off any foam that forms while the peas simmer; otherwise, the stew may taste slightly bitter.

Tarifte 35 dakika yazıyordu ama bezelyelerim eski olduğundan 50 dakikada tam yumuşadı. Bakliyat ne kadar eski olursa pişme süresi de o kadar uzuyor, önceden test etmek gerekiyor.
