Pilaf
This Lebanese-style pilaf combines toasted vermicelli and rice, topped with spicy onions crisped in the air fryer. The air fryer’s intense hot air makes the onions nearly as crisp as deep-frying, with much less oil.
Soak the rice in warm salted water for 10 minutes, then rinse it.
Toss the onion with the cooking oil. Cook it in an air fryer preheated to 190°C / 375°F, shaking the basket occasionally, for 8 minutes or until crisp. If you do not have an air fryer, bake it in a preheated 190°C / 375°F oven for 12 minutes to achieve similar crispness.
Toast the vermicelli in a pan until golden.
Add the drained rice, red pepper flakes, and allspice; stir for 2 more minutes.
Add the hot water and salt. Once it comes to a boil, cover and cook over low heat for 12 minutes.
Remove from the heat and let the pilaf rest for 8 minutes, then garnish with the crispy onions and serve.
Arrange the onions in a single layer in the air fryer basket; they will not crisp if piled up. Watch the vermicelli closely as it toasts because it can darken and burn quickly. Allergen: contains wheat (gluten).
