A quick Syrian dessert, namoura is made by combining semolina and yogurt, baking the batter, then soaking the hot cake in syrup. This recipe needs no jar, and the cake is ready to go into the oven in under 20 minutes.
Bring the sugar, water, and lemon juice to a boil. Simmer for 8 minutes, until slightly thickened, then set aside to cool.
Mix the semolina, yogurt, sugar, melted butter, and baking powder. Pour into a greased baking dish and arrange the almonds on top.
Bake in an oven preheated to 180°C / 355°F for 30 minutes, until the edges darken.
Slowly pour the cold syrup over the hot cake. Slice and serve.
Keep the syrup cold and the cake hot; if both are at the same temperature, the syrup will not absorb fully. Do not extend the baking time; remove the cake as soon as the edges darken. Allergen information: Contains wheat (gluten from semolina), dairy (yogurt), and tree nuts (almonds).
