Nasi kuning is turmeric-colored rice served at the center of the table for birthdays and celebrations in Indonesia. Rice is pressure-cooked with coconut milk, turmeric, lemongrass, and bay leaves. Hearty and aromatic, it can be served as a main dish.

Step by Step

How to make it?

1

Rinse the rice

5 min

Rinse the rice several times until the water runs clear, then let it drain in a colander.

2

Add the ingredients to the pressure cooker

5 min

Add the rinsed rice, coconut milk, water, turmeric, garlic, lemongrass, bay leaf, and salt to the pressure cooker. Stir gently.

3

Pressure-cook the rice

25 min

Close the lid and heat the pressure cooker over medium heat until it reaches pressure and starts to whistle. Reduce the heat to low and cook for 12 minutes. Remove from the heat and let the pressure release naturally.

4

Fluff and serve

5 min

Remove the lemongrass and bay leaf, fluff the rice with a fork, and serve hot.

Reminder

Rinse the rice until the water runs clear before cooking, or the grains may stick together. Remember to remove the lemongrass and bay leaf before serving.
