Sopes are a colorful Mexican snack made from small, thick masa harina bases shaped like boats by pinching up the edges, then topped with mashed beans, cheese, and charred vegetables. Preparing the toppings separately takes time, but the dish is ideal for a gathering.

Step by Step

How to make it?

1

Make the dough

15 min

Mix the masa harina with the salt. Gradually add the hot water and knead to form a dough. Divide it into 8 equal balls and let them rest for 15 minutes.

2

Shape the masa boats

25 min

Flatten each ball into a disc about 1 cm thick. Lightly cook both sides in a dry skillet for 2 minutes, then pinch the edges upward with your fingers to form a boat.

3

Fry the shells

15 min

Heat the cooking oil in a skillet. Fry the masa boats for 6–7 minutes, until the bottoms are golden and crisp.

4

Fill and serve

10 min

Fill the fried shells with mashed red beans. Top with the onion, tomato, crumbled white cheese, and lettuce, then serve immediately.

Reminder

Keep the edges of the masa boats at least 1 cm thick; thinner edges may crack while frying. Contains milk and dairy products.
