How Many Calories Are in a Can of Chickpeas?

A standard 400-gram can of chickpeas contains roughly 280 calories before draining. That figure is based on the gross weight including the liquid; the chickpeas themselves make up about two-thirds of the can.

Once drained and rinsed, the net weight drops to around 240 grams, while the calorie count stays close to 250 calories — because the calories live in the chickpeas, not the liquid. Draining the can thoroughly does not change the total much; it mainly lowers the salt content.

Is there a difference from freshly boiled chickpeas?

240 grams of chickpeas boiled at home from dried ones carries almost the same calories as the canned version; cooking method does not change the chickpea's own calorie count. The real difference is in prep time — dried chickpeas need soaking and hours of boiling, while canned ones are ready to use.

The liquid in a can of chickpeas usually contains salt and sometimes a preservative, which changes flavour and sodium but not calories. Using the liquid instead of draining it can change both the salt level and the texture, which is why most recipes call for draining and rinsing.

How does preparation change the calories?

Sautéing chickpeas in olive oil for hummus or a salad adds oil, tahini and lemon that push the total up quickly; a bowl of hummus can carry several times the calories of plain chickpeas. Adding boiled chickpeas straight into a salad, by contrast, keeps the total low.

Roasted chickpea snacks are one of the highest-calorie preparations; even a handful roasted with a little oil in the oven can approach 150 calories. That is because the surface absorbs oil during roasting.

How many servings does one can provide?

A 400-gram can usually stretches to 3-4 servings, which works out to somewhere between 60 and 85 calories per portion. Chickpeas' high fibre and protein content makes them filling despite that low number.

How do they compare with other canned legumes?

Canned chickpeas sit in roughly the same calorie range as canned kidney beans or canned lentils; all land around 100-120 calories per 100 grams. That similarity comes from most legumes sharing a similar carbohydrate and protein ratio.

Leaving an opened can of chickpeas out does not change its calories but does raise the risk of spoilage; an opened can should be moved to a sealed container in the fridge and used within two to three days. Past that point the calorie table stays the same, but eating them is no longer safe. Checking the can's own label rather than relying on memory is the most reliable way to compare it with fresh or dried chickpeas cooked at home.

Konserve nohudu her zaman iyice süzüp durulayarak kullanıyorum, tuzunu azaltmak için işe yarıyor ve salataya eklediğimde kalorisinin gerçekten düşük kaldığını fark ettim.
