How Can You Tell If Strawberries Have Gone Bad or Mouldy?

Strawberries going bad shows up most clearly through white or grey fuzzy mould patches, extreme softness and dark, leaking spots; fresh strawberries are bright red, offer a little resistance to the touch and smell lightly sweet. Because strawberries have soft skin, they spoil much faster than many other fruits.

How do you spot mould and blemishes?

A white or grey fuzzy layer on a strawberry is the clearest sign of mould; once mould appears on one berry, not just that fruit but any neighbouring berries it touched are also at risk, since mould spores spread quickly. Because of this, spotting one mouldy strawberry in a box is not enough reason to discard just that one; the surrounding berries need a careful check too. Dark, wet spots, even without visible mould, are a sign that rot has begun; strawberries like this should be eaten right away if possible or discarded.

How should texture and smell be judged?

Fresh strawberries have a noticeable firmness when pressed lightly with a finger; a berry that stays dented or releases liquid has already started to spoil. Red liquid pooling at the bottom of the box is a sign that the berries underneath have been crushed or started to rot; if this liquid appears, the whole box should be checked over. In terms of smell, fresh strawberries carry a lightly sweet aroma; if a sour, yeasty or almost alcoholic smell is noticed, the strawberries should no longer be eaten, since that smell signals fermentation has started.

Does storing with or without the stem matter?

Strawberries with the stem removed lose moisture through the cut surface and spoil faster; because of this, berries that will not be eaten right away should keep their stems on until they are washed and used. The stem also acts as a natural barrier that offers the fruit some protection against microorganisms getting in. Washed strawberries spoil much faster than unwashed ones, so strawberries should be washed right before use and never put in the fridge wet.

How does proper storage extend shelf life?

Strawberries stored in the fridge in a single layer, with no weight pressing down on them, in a container lined with paper towel, can stay fresh for 3 to 7 days. Strawberries washed in a vinegar-water solution and dried thoroughly can last a little longer than usual, since some of the mould spores on the surface get cleared away. Freezing is an effective method for long-term storage; strawberries washed, hulled, frozen in a single layer and then transferred into a bag can be used for months.

Which strawberries should you pick when shopping?

When choosing strawberries from a box, it is worth checking the bottom layer too, since sellers sometimes place good-looking berries on top while crushed ones sit underneath. Berries that are evenly sized, glossy and have a fresh-looking stem are the best pick; if moisture or red staining is visible at the bottom of the box, avoiding that box lowers the risk of fast spoilage once home. Buying strawberries in season and from a local grower when possible is an added advantage, since it also cuts down the risk of spoilage from a long transport time.

Sirkeli suda yıkayıp iyice kuruttuktan sonra kâğıt havlulu kutuda sakladım, gerçekten bir hafta boyunca hiç küflenmedi. Öncesinde iki üç günde küf başlıyordu, fark çok net oldu.
