At the heart of Ethiopia’s coffee ceremony, buna is made by roasting raw coffee beans at home, grinding them and brewing them with cardamom and cinnamon. Served without sugar or with a little honey, its antioxidant content makes it a heart-friendly drink between meals.

Step by Step

How to make it?

1

Roast the coffee beans

15 min

Roast the coffee beans in a dry frying pan, stirring constantly, until they turn dark brown and look slightly oily.

2

Cool

10 min

Transfer the roasted beans to a plate and leave to cool to room temperature.

3

Grind

5 min

Finely grind the cooled beans in a coffee grinder.

4

Infuse

15 min

Put the ground coffee, water, cardamom and cinnamon in a small coffee pot and bring to the boil. Let it rise and lift it off the heat three times, brewing for a total of 15 minutes.

5

Serve

5 min

Let the brewed coffee stand until the grounds settle, then strain into small cups. Add honey if you wish and serve.

Reminder

Keep the pan on the heat while roasting the coffee beans. Even a few seconds of inattention can make them bitter.

Çekirdekleri kendim kavurunca ev kahve kokusuyla doldu, kakuleli hâli klasik kahveden çok daha aromatik.
