This hearty Italian-style casserole combines cooked ziti with chicken in tomato sauce and is baked with plenty of cheese. Serve it as a main dish at a gathering.
Cook the ziti in plenty of salted water for 2 minutes less than the package directions, then drain. Do not overcook it; it will cook again in the oven.
Sauté the onion and garlic in olive oil until lightly golden. Add the chicken pieces and cook until they change color. Stir in the tomato sauce, thyme, salt, and black pepper, then simmer for 10 minutes.
Mix the drained ziti with the chicken sauce and transfer it to a greased baking dish. Sprinkle the grated kashar cheese and mozzarella evenly over the top.
Bake in a preheated oven until the cheese is bubbling and golden. Important: let the casserole rest for a few minutes after removing it from the oven.
Important: Cook the chicken breast thoroughly until no pink remains inside; undercooked chicken is a food-safety risk. Allergens: contains wheat (gluten) and dairy (kashar cheese, mozzarella). Let the casserole rest for 5 minutes after baking so the cheese sets and it can be sliced neatly.
