A classic German horseradish sauce served with boiled meats and smoked fish, Meerrettich thickens as cream simmers gently. Serve it with roast or boiled meats for a celebratory meal.

Step by Step

How to make it?

1

Make the Sauce Base

8 min

Melt the butter in a small saucepan. Add the flour and cook for 2 minutes, stirring to prevent lumps. Gradually pour in the cream while whisking until smooth.

2

Add the Horseradish

25 min

Stir in the grated horseradish, sour cream, salt, and sugar. Simmer gently over low heat for 25 minutes, until thickened.

3

Finish the Sauce

5 min

Remove from the heat, stir in the lemon juice, and let rest for 5 minutes. Serve warm.

Reminder

Do not boil the sauce over high heat; cream sauces can split when boiled. Thicken it patiently over low heat. Contains milk and dairy, and wheat/gluten.
