This Irish soda bread is rolled thin and baked with spicy cheese sprinkled on top, turning it into a crisp-edged snack. The dough rises with baking powder and buttermilk, so no yeast is needed.

Step by Step

How to make it?

1

Mix the Dough

6 min

Mix the flour, baking powder, and salt in a bowl. Add the buttermilk and melted butter, and knead just enough to bring the dough together. Do not over-knead.

2

Roll Thin

5 min

On a floured surface, roll the dough into a thin circle about 5 mm thick.

3

Add the Cheese and Red Pepper Flakes

3 min

Sprinkle the grated Kashar cheese and the Turkish red pepper flakes evenly over the dough.

4

Bake

25 min

Bake in an oven preheated to 210°C / 410°F for 25 minutes, until the cheese is bubbling and the edges are golden.

Reminder

Important: Do not over-knead the dough, or it will become tough; soda bread dough should be gathered and shaped only a few times. Contains wheat/gluten (flour) and dairy (buttermilk and cheddar).
