Lokshyna z makom is a classic dessert served at Ukrainian Christmas Eve (Sviata Vecheria) meals, combining boiled thin noodles with poppy seeds crushed with honey. Even without added sugar, it has a natural sweetness.

Step by Step

How to make it?

1

Soak the poppy seeds in hot water

30 min

Soak the poppy seeds in hot water for 30 minutes to soften them.

2

Boil the noodles

10 min

Boil the thin noodles in salted water for the time listed on the package, then drain.

3

Crush the poppy seeds

8 min

Drain the poppy seeds and crush them with the honey and dried currants in a mortar or food processor until you have a thick paste.

4

Toss the noodles with the poppy seed mixture

5 min

Mix the hot noodles with the poppy seed paste and butter, and serve warm.

Reminder

If you crush the poppy seeds without soaking them, they will remain gritty and will not release their full flavor; do not skip soaking them in hot water. Allergens: wheat (gluten) and dairy (butter).
