Nasi kucing is the small-portion rice dish of Yogyakarta's streets, combining a little rice with hot sambal, toasted peanuts and chargrilled tempeh. With its small serving and generous vegetable accompaniments, it is a heart-friendly, low-carbohydrate choice.

Step by Step

How to make it?

1

Cook the rice

20 min

Boil the rice as usual and divide into small portions spread in a thin layer.

2

Make the sambal

15 min

Sauté the hot red peppers, tomatoes and crushed garlic cloves in olive oil. Blend and season with salt.

3

Fry the tempeh

10 min

Slice the tempeh and fry in a little oil until browned on both sides.

4

Plate up

5 min

Arrange the sambal, fried tempeh and toasted peanuts alongside the small portions of rice and serve.

Reminder

Keep the heat very low when making the sambal. High heat will burn the tomatoes and give them a bitter taste.

Sambalı blenderden geçirmeden önce domatesi çok kısa sürede kavurdum, bu yüzden sos beklediğimden biraz sulu kaldı; tarifte belirtilen kavurma süresini daha uzun tutmam gerekirmiş, ikinci denemede düzelteceğim.

Küçük porsiyonlar sayesinde iki tabak yesem bile kendimi ağır hissetmedim, sambalın acısı da tam kıvamındaydı.
