Cook the Blueberries

This Nova Scotia dessert is made by dropping spoonfuls of dough onto simmering blueberries and steaming them under a lid. The whole-wheat dumplings make it a light dessert with less sugar.
Put the blueberries, granulated sugar, lemon juice, and a little water in a wide pot and bring to a boil. Simmer over low heat until the berries soften and the mixture thickens slightly.
Mix the whole-wheat flour, baking powder, and salt. Add the melted butter and milk and stir to make a sticky dough.
Use a spoon to drop pieces of dough onto the simmering fruit, leaving space between them. Cover the pot tightly and cook over low heat without lifting the lid.
Check that the dumplings have risen and are cooked through with a toothpick. Serve hot.
Do not lift the lid during cooking; escaping steam can leave the dumplings raw inside. If using frozen blueberries, add them directly to the pot without thawing. Contains wheat (gluten) and dairy.
