Pastel de Chaves comes from the town of Chaves in Portugal. It is made by filling thin puff pastry with seasoned ground beef and baking until crisp. The pastries are easy to assemble in batches and are often served by the tray at parties.

Step by Step

How to make it?

1

Cook the ground beef

8 min

Sauté the onion and add the crushed garlic. Add the ground beef and cook for 8 minutes, until it changes color.

2

Cool the filling

30 min

Add the red pepper paste, bay leaf, and salt. Cook over low heat for 10 more minutes, then let the filling cool completely.

3

Wrap the pastries

17 min

Cut the puff pastry into rectangles. Place some of the cooled filling in the center of each piece and roll it up.

4

Bake

20 min

Brush the tops with egg yolk and bake in a preheated 200°C / 390°F oven for 20 minutes, until golden and crisp.

Reminder

Cool the filling completely before wrapping it in the pastry; hot filling can melt and soften the puff pastry and cause the layers to stick together. Contains wheat (gluten) and eggs.
